School for young Asmat in Papua

CONTEXT

The Asmat ethnic group inhabits the Agats area, in Papua, and is one of the peoples that has remained isolated for a long time from modernity. As the region became a province of Indonesia, its population centers increasingly opened up to the arrival of officials and businessmen from other parts of the Asian country. The Asmats had to deal with the problems associated with their illiteracy and with a traditional system unable to relate to the present.

FRANCISCAN’S PRESENCE

The Friars Minor play a decisive role in the development of the region: the bishop of Agats is in fact the Franciscan Monsignor Aloysius Morwito OFM. Since he received the assignment, Msgr. Aloysius has taken the situation of the Asmats to heart, establishing a school in 2020 capable of providing young people with the necessary training to deal with a completely new society.

THE PROJECT

The Agats school allows 95 young people to be trained by a quality teaching staff and in a comfortable environment. Today the need is to expand the number of classrooms, to be able to accommodate another 60 young people, and to build a female dormitory. Thanks to these interventions, young Asmat people will be able to face the challenges of their future with greater awareness.
