CONTEXT
The floods that affected Pakistan throughout the month of August 2022 left over 1,100 dead and 1,600 injured. Sindh, in the south of the country, was the worst affected province in terms of human and infrastructural impact.
Houses were destroyed, water flooded everything, flooding fields, destroying crops, and killing animals. It is estimated that more than 800,000 heads of livestock have been lost and many families, already very poor, have thus lost all sources of livelihood.
FRANCISCAN’S PRESENCE
In Sindh, 25 Franciscan friars are working in 6 parishes taking care of more than 5,000 families.
The Franciscan friars are well aware that people need them. Despite living in the same conditions and facing the same daily difficulties, they want to remain close to the people in this dramatic moment.
THE PROJECT
The friars are doing their best to care for the poorest families in the parishes, brought to their knees by the floods. They visit people in distress, spend time with them, and offer comfort, food, and shelter to those with nothing left. The situation, however, is really dramatic, and they cannot cope alone.
The challenge that awaits them now is that of rebuilding houses and restoring the conditions necessary for a dignified life, starting with the purchase of those cattle that represent the main source of livelihood for families.
